Long before dawn breaks over the plateau of Jharkhand, the trail at Madhuban stirs to life in near silence. Lanterns and flashlights bob along the forested incline, cutting through a thick veil of midnight mist and ancient sal canopies. This is Parasnath, or Shikharji—the “Venerable Peak”—where earth meets spirit across a rigorous twenty-seven-kilometer pilgrimage.
The ascent is an intimate test of endurance and devotion. The mountain rises steeply to 4500 feet, its jagged granite spine cutting into the humid air. For centuries, barefoot pilgrims and wandering trekkers have traced this very stone pathway, where twenty of the twenty-four Jain Tirthankaras are believed to have attained moksha. Every few kilometers, the forest parts to reveal a solitary, white-domed tonk—a marble shrine gleaming like an ivory pearl against dark rock, holding the carved footprints of an enlightened soul.
As you crest the high ridge near the summit of Parasnath Tonk, the darkness yields to a breathtaking dawn. The surrounding plains of Chota Nagpur stretch out endlessly below, submerged beneath a rolling ocean of morning clouds. Up here, where crisp winds sweep past prayer flags and sacred bell chimes echo into the valleys, the relentless physical burn in your legs dissolves into sheer serenity. It is less a conventional mountain hike and more a passage through time, endurance, and quiet contemplation.
