Yelbong Canyon and the surrounding area in Kalimpong district, North Bengal is home to one of the few river canyon trekking experiences in this region of India — the Yelbong River Canyon Trek — a truly unique off-beat nature adventure.
The trek is essentially a river canyon walk along and into the Rumti River gorge carved through forest and rocky terrain.
You trek through narrow river valleys, forested hills, and natural canyon formations to reach deeper rock passages and even small caves.
In parts, you may need to scramble over boulders and stones, wade shallow water, and step through rocky corridors — making it an exciting mix of hiking and river walking.
The route runs along a mountain river with water cascades and hidden waterfalls, including reportedly scenic spots like Rainbow Falls and others popular with explorers.
The canyon feel comes from tight valleys carved by water over time — in some places you’re literally walking inside a nature-formed channel.
It’s a low-altitude, forest + river canyon trek, so it’s quite different from classic Himalayan hill treks.
The trek starting point is near Yelbong village in the Kalimpong area of West Bengal.
Today we will pick you up from New Mal Railway Junction station at 10 am and transport you to Yellbong Village.
The distance is approximately 40 kms and takes around 1.5-2 hours through mountain valleys and tea gardens.
From the road head the camping area is around 45 mins hiking through forest trails. Upon arrival at campsite, get freshen up and have lunch.
Post lunch we go for a village walk.
At evening indulge into the riverside camping with stargazing, fun, gossip and campfire.
Go early to bed for an early rise for our ultimate hiking.
